A living book
In Hovering Flight
Joyce Hinnefeld
Joyce Hinnefeld’s In Hovering Flight is a poignant, lyrical novel exploring the messy, beautiful bonds between mothers and daughters. The story follows thirty-four-year-old Scarlet as she returns home for the final days of her mother, Addie. Addie was a famous bird artist and a fierce, radical environmental activist who was often as distant a parent as she was passionate about the planet. As Addie passes away, long-held family secrets unspool. Surrounded by her father and her mother’s closest friends, Scarlet must untangle a complex web of art, activism, and regret to finally understand her mother's complicated legacy.

Reflections
Hovering was a bit of a shift for me, especially coming off the fast-paced style of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. It took some time to adjust to the slower, more deliberate rhythm, but I eventually found my groove with Hinnefeld’s writing style. It’s definitely a beautifully written book. I appreciated how she layered the story, exploring complex themes like illness, death, and the role of art in the human experience.❤️
